Brand Coverage

The percentage of AI responses that cite your domain.

Brand Coverage is the percentage of AI responses, across the scope you are looking at, that cited your domain at least once. It is the most direct measure of "are we showing up". An AI response is the atomic unit: one Prompt sent to one AI platform produces one response, and that response either cited you or it did not.

Formula

Brand Coverage is responses_citing_user / total_responses, expressed as a percentage. The denominator is every AI response in the window; the numerator is the subset where your domain appeared as a cited source or attributed brand mention.

Calculating it response by response (rather than source by source) keeps the metric stable when a single high-volume third-party source rarely co-cites you: that source pulls the source-side denominator without changing your numerator. Response-based Brand Coverage matches what a customer would count manually if they re-read every answer.

Benchmark ranges

These ranges are a rough guide based on observed data:

  • Under 10% - you are functionally invisible to AI platforms for the Prompts you care about. Almost every category has something to improve.
  • 10 to 30% - typical for brands that have content in the category but no dedicated AI visibility work.
  • 30 to 50% - strong performance. Most of your target Prompts will name your domain at least once.
  • Above 50% - excellent. This is the zone where AI platforms consistently treat your domain as a primary source.

Category matters. A well-defined niche can push Brand Coverage much higher than a broad, crowded category.

What counts as a citation

A citation is a direct link or attributed mention of your domain within the AI response. Plain brand mentions without a link, or passing references inside a list of many brands, may or may not count depending on the platform; the scoring logic is deliberately conservative to avoid overstating coverage.

Improving Brand Coverage

Coverage is lifted by content and entity clarity, not by tricks. When a new page publishes and starts getting cited, Brand Coverage rises because more AI responses now point at your domain. The Read analytics guide covers which signals to act on first.
